Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) is a system used in engineering and manufacturing to define the size, form, orientation, and location of features on a part. Unlike traditional dimensioning, which relies solely on measurements, GD&T uses symbolic language to communicate design intent clearly and precisely, ensuring that parts fit and function as intended.
GD&T improves consistency in manufacturing by providing a common standard for engineers, machinists, and quality inspectors. It helps reduce ambiguity in drawings, allowing for more accurate tolerances and reducing the risk of errors during production. Features such as flatness, perpendicularity, and concentricity are specified to control part geometry rigorously. By applying GD&T, companies can optimize assembly processes, enhance product performance, and minimize waste. It allows for more flexibility in production while maintaining functional requirements, ensuring parts from different suppliers are interchangeable. Overall, GD&T is a powerful tool that bridges design and manufacturing with precision and efficiency.
Participants in this program will learn to:
Understand the benefits of using and applying GD&T
Correctly identify and apply GD&T practices to parts and drawings
Correctly interpret technical drawings
Study tolerance suitability to mating parts and features to ensure proper assembly fit and functionality
Understand the allowable variation in finished part size, as compared to the idealized form
Learn how to conduct measurement, tolerance calculation and inspection from GD&T symbols
Module 1: Introduction to Features and Fitting
Module 2: Tolerance Stackup Analysis
Module 3: GD&T Symbols and Feature Control Frame
Module 4: Measurement Datum (Reference)
Module 5: Tolerance Zones
Module 6: Form, Orientation, and Location Tolerances
Module 7: Runout and Profile Tolerances
Module 8: Advanced Feature Control Frames and Datum Shift
This Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing course is suited towards all individuals involved in the design & manufacturing processes, from design engineers through to manufacturing engineers, technicians and inspectors of all abilities.
This is a 2-days programme. This course runs from 9:00am – 5:00pm with an hour for lunch and periodic short breaks.
This is an intensive session designed to include as much discussion as possible. Lunch and breaks provide an opportunity for further questioning and discussion with the instructors.
