Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) is an approach to workplace safety that emphasizes the importance of individual behaviours in preventing accidents and injuries. It focuses on understanding the root causes of unsafe behaviours and promoting positive actions that enhance safety. BBS is grounded in the principles of psychology and behaviour science, particularly the ABC model (Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence), which explores how environmental factors and consequences influence behaviour.
By observing and analysing both safe and unsafe behaviours, BBS encourages employees to adopt safer practices through positive reinforcement and constructive feedback. The approach involves all levels of an organization, from front-line employees to management, creating a culture of safety where everyone is accountable and engaged. Implementing BBS can lead to significant reductions in workplace incidents, improved safety performance, and a more proactive and aware workforce. By fostering a continuous improvement mindset, BBS helps organizations sustain long-term safety enhancements and create a safer working environment.
To equip managers and supervisors with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively implement and sustain behavior-based safety (BBS) practices, fostering a positive safety culture and reducing workplace accidents.
