Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is a key performance metric used to measure how effectively manufacturing equipment is utilized. It provides a clear picture of equipment performance by combining three essential factors — Availability, Performance, and Quality. Through this, OEE helps organizations identify production losses, quantify efficiency gaps, and track improvement progress over time.

OEE plays a vital role in Lean Manufacturing and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) strategies. By understanding and applying OEE, companies can uncover the “Six Big Losses” that affect productivity, such as downtime, speed loss, and defects. It serves as a powerful diagnostic tool that connects daily operations to broader business goals of reliability, cost reduction, and continuous improvement.
