Growing a company or building a team is like growing a garden - weeds sprout up automatically. You must take proactive and persistent action to prevent those weeds from overrunning your garden. An effective organization composed of a network of teams that works effectively across departments and functional groups doesn't happen by accident. It has to be by design - a design that includes constant re-evaluation of the needs of your customers, team members and your organization.
At the same time, driving your organization to greater success requires setting and achieving goals that currently seem ambitious. Unfortunately, it’s one thing to set an audacious goal and it’s another to get your team to emotionally invest in a target that seems beyond what they are currently capable of and make meaningful progress towards it.
The tendency for people to stay inside their comfort zone is strong. When faced with a new challenge, some will immediately find silent ‘reasons’ for not committing. Companies can attempt to encourage with external rewards and incentives but you know yourself that even with the best will in the world, there is often a gap between wanting a result and doing something about achieving it. And when commitment is half-hearted, progress can be poor and motivation falters.
To build an effective team, from time to time, it is important to take time away from the day-to-day pressures of a rapidly changing environment for a corporate retreat to devote quality time to:
•assess the degree to which the team is in sync with their corporate culture and values •ensure that all team members have a clear sense of their role in fulfilling your company's vision and mission •fine tuning their ability to communicate and work together as a one team.
